This shell doesn't come from a gastropod or bivalve, like the vast majority of shells you find on the beach. It is formed inside a deep-water squid Spirula spirula. Pretty much nothing is known about this creature aside from the fact that it can emit some bioluminescence and lives too deep for divers to see it. Despite such exotic background, these shells are very common on Australian beaches.
